Losing your voice is an inconvenience, frustrating and can have a detrimental affect on your ability to communicate, especially if your role relies on you being able to speak or sing clearly.

Why Do You Lose Your Voice?

Things like poor breath support, vocal technique and posture can all lead to laryngeal tension, which can lead to you losing your voice. And, whilst vocal exercises can help alleviate and restore the voice, persistent -or sudden – vocal loss due to laryngeal tension, often requires a therapeutic approach. This is where manual manipulation comes in.

What is a Vocal Massage?

A vocal massage is a specialised form of massage therapy that focuses on releasing tension in the muscles related to voice production. This includes areas such as the:

  • Neck

  • Jaw (masseter muscles)

  • Throat (laryngeal muscles)

  • Shoulders

  • Chest

  • Tongue and sometimes inside the mouth (intraoral work)

It is commonly used by anyone who uses their voice heavily, especially singers, teachers, public speakers and actors. It helps:

  • Improve vocal quality

  • Increase vocal range and flexibility

  • Reduce hoarseness or vocal fatigue

  • Ease muscle tension that restricts natural voice use

How It Works:

The therapist gently manipulates muscles and soft tissues that support the larynx (voice box) and surrounding structures. Intraoral work (massage inside the mouth using gloves) may also be performed to release tension in deep tongue and jaw muscles.

Benefits:

  • Restores healthy vocal function

  • Enhances breath support and resonance

  • Prevents or alleviates voice strain or injury

  • Improves overall posture and alignment for better vocal production

It’s often done in conjunction with vocal coaching or speech therapy, especially for those recovering from vocal injuries or disorders.
