There are a few simple, universal exercises that vocal coaches use across all methods and pedagogies to help prepare the voice for singing. Below, I’ve listed seven exercises that I personally use to ground and warm up a vocalist’s voice.
Like any discipline, these exercises require consistent practice. Aim to spend at least 10–20 minutes a day working through them at home.
Important: None of these exercises involve shouting!
1. Humming ("bUMble")
Balances the vocal cords and gently engages the voice.
Activation: Say “bUUUMMMble bee” slowly and deliberately. This is the best first step in your warm-up.
2. “Hug”
Opens your vocal space using your speaking voice.
Activation: Say “hug” while pretending to sob or moan. This helps open the throat naturally.
3. “Hallelujah”
Locates the diaphragm and promotes healthy breath support.
Activation: Say or sing “HAAALLELUJAH” with praise—feel the lift in your breath and energy.
4. Sirening on “oo” (as in “boot”)
Smooths out register transitions and reduces vocal breaks.
Activation: Glide from low to high and back again, mimicking an air raid or ambulance siren.
5. “Ng” (as in “sing”)
Improves pitch accuracy and head voice resonance.
Activation: Imagine revving a motorcycle through your nose. Keep the back of your tongue high and relaxed.
6. “Nee Nay Na Noh Noo”
Focuses your tone and encourages forward vocal placement.
Instructions: Hold each note for 1 second. Then, repeat the sequence using “M” instead of “N”.
Activation: None required—just stay consistent and clear.
7. 8-Note Scale (C–C)
Strengthens aural skills and pitch control.
Instructions: Sing up and down an 8-note major scale. Change keys when possible using a keyboard or guitar.
Activation: Use “Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do”.
To Your Vocal Success!
Keep your practice regular, gentle and focused. Your voice will thank you.
